Summary:This paper is to be understood as part of what Besse (2012) calls an internal history of FL/L2 didactics, which focuses on teaching techniques (as discussed in foreign language teacher training textbooks) rather than on the teaching methods justifying those techniques. We show that the authors of the selection of texts (1874-1950) discussed arrive at very similar conclusions with respect to the double issue of (1) whether or not grammar should be taught? and (2) the best way to promote acquisition of common L2 morphosyntaxic patterns? Indeed, the authors agree more often than they differ.
