Summary:We determined whether availability of new antiretroviral treatments has had any impact on the rate of death for people with HIV-1 infection. Distribution of antiretroviral drugs in British Columbia, Canada, is free of charge through the Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS Treatment Programme. Our data show a substantial decrease in AIDS-related mortality in the province of British Columbia. The decline in mortality coincides with the availability of lamivudine in the province through open access and with the expanded use of double combination antiretroviral therapy. We believe this mortality trend will likely continue as protease inhibitors an non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors are used to greater extent within the treatment programme.
