Summary:Among the various methods for determining the particle size of cigarette smoke are those of special interest, which provide information on the cigarette aerosol properties as close as possible to the conditions immediately before and during the smoking process. One has to cope with the following problems: (1) the cigarette aerosol is an extremely dense aerosol, (2) it contains a considerable amount of volatile compounds, (3) its refractive index is dependent on the varying composition of very large number of substances, (4) within the relevant "puffing period" it is rapidly changing not only because of e.g. coagulation, but also because of the changing smoke formation conditions during this period.
