Summary: | Confronted with the numerous inscriptions present in the field of medieval sculpture, one can consider thèse texts and their graphic materiality as tools for answering numerous questions that arise from the sculptural ensembles, such as attribution, dating, and iconographic meaning. Other lessons, however, can be pulled from these textual artifacts. The inscriptions are not simple complements to the works, or, in the best cases, commentaries on the iconography of the sculptures. Relationships between the sculptural and textual are far more complex. While some epigraphs may only reflect cultural habits, others are the ambitious product of a parallel discourse, which can occasionally lie in contrast to the image itself. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT] |
