Summary:Materials obtained by the treatment of three Polish bituminous coals with N-methyl-2-pyrrolidonone (NMP) and with an alkali/methanol mixture were characterized. The yields and structural properties of the products were compared with those obtained by thermodesorption followed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. The yields of the NMP extractable materials, obtained in one step at low temperature, were in the 30-42% range, depending on coal rank. The extracted products contain only a few percent of light compounds; PAH and n-alkanes were identified.
