Summary:The environmental changes that hasten the demise of the cortically endangered riverine rabbit are discussed. Riverine rabbit conservation efforts to date are centered on the education of landowners and their employees, the establishment of private conservancies and ex situ captive breeding. Fieldwork targeting the high probability areas identified by the habitat model ensures optimal use of funding with iterative cycles of fieldwork and modeling progressively improving the habitat model. Translocation of mammals between conservation areas has a long-standing history in conservation. It is stated that continued inter-provisional conservation agency cooperation is a key factor in the short-term survival of the riverine rabbit. It is suggested that the cryo-preservation of genetic material be promoted as a safeguard against the permanent disappearance of this species.
