Summary:Phytoextraction potential of Sporobulus pyramidalis found in an abandoned battery industry environment in Nigeria was investigated. Industries discharged their wastes containing heavy metals into terrestrial and aquatic environments. Sampling of S. pyramidalis was carried out within the Sunshine Battery Industry environment where battery waste was stored in open drums. The results indicated that the concentration of these heavy metals determined was remarkably higher in the dry than wet season, indicating that the pollution of the environment was more intense during the dry season. It was concluded that the toxicants including heavy metals absorbed into plants were dependent upon factors namely, solubility, pH, type of tissue exposure of the plant to the toxicants.
