Summary:Using mixed product Al-substituted 11 angstrom A tobermorite derived from newsprint recycling residue, the kinetics and steady-state behavior of the sorption of Co super(2+) and Sr super(2+) were investigated. The mixed product of Al-substituted 11 angstrom tobermorite and katoite could be synthesized from newsprint recycling combustion ash via a hydrothermal route. Batch sorption studies confirmed that the mixed product was an effective sorbent for the exclusion of Co super(2+) and Sr super(2+) from acidic aqueous media. The maximum uptake capacities for Co super(2+) and Sr super(2+) at 20 degree C were 10.47 and 1.52 mg g super(-1), respectively, and the respective apparent pseudo-second-order rate constants were estimated to be 5.08 10 super(-3) and 6.96 10 super(-3) g mg super(-1) min super(-1).
