Summary:To help relieve the pressures of increasing urban water demand, a rainwater collection system concept was explored for a residential area in Norrkoping, Sweden. Four scenarios of the water savings potential of rainwater as a to supplement drinking water supplies were examined utilizing a computer model. Water savings efficiency (WSE) is used as a performance measure. Both standard and low water consumption appliances were taken into account. Rainwater roof runoff quality, health impacts of rainwater runoff collection, and infrastructure options are discussed. Factors affecting WSE include household occupancy, roof area, storage capacity, appliance discharge volume, car washing demand, and irrigation use. Rainwater tanks can contribute significantly to drinking water supplies in a dual water supply solution, especially if low water consumption appliances are installed. Tank sizes, materials, and placing are recommended.
