Summary:Fundamental mechanisms of electrocoagulation as applied in electrochemical wastewater treatment are delineated, highlighting design parameters that can be exploited to optimize system performance. Reactions at the electrodes are explained and design of an electrocoagulation cell is detailed with reference to the long and short horizontal plate reactors and tall vertical, perforated tube, solid tube, and perforated plate reactors. Literature surveys indicate that up-flow arrangements of the electrocoagulator are superior to horizontal flow configurations.
