Summary:Roadside moss samplings in the towns of northern and southeastern Nigeria were analyzed for lead, zinc, cadmium, copper, and nickel concentrations. While the southeast exhibited higher average lead levels than the northeast, concentrations of all other heavy metals were comparable. There was a poor correlation between lead levels and concentrations of other metals, suggesting that there are sources other than automobile emissions for the heavy metals found in moss. A previous study of the southwestern region suggests that there are higher concentrations of heavy metals in this region.
