Effect of Cypermethrin on Antioxidant Enzyme Activities and Lipid Peroxidation in Liver and Kidney of the Freshwater Fish, Oreochromis niloticus and Cyprinus carpio (L.)

Summary:Male Oreochromis niloticus and Cyprinus carpio were exposed to cypermethrin at a concentration of 3 mu g/l, and effects on antioxidant enzyme activities and lipid peroxidation in liver and kidney tissue were examined. In both species, antioxidant enzyme activities and malondialdehyde levels were increased significantly in liver compared to control values, except for glutathione peroxidase activity in C. carpio. In kidney, levels of all parameters also increased significantly, except for catalase activity in O. niloticus. The increases in the activities of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase and the content of malondialdehyde in the kidney of both species were higher than the increases in liver.
