Summary:Past surface coal mining activities have resulted in significant disturbances to the landscape of the Lusatian coal mining region of Germany. These disturbances to land cover, forests, agricultural systems, geological material, and hydrology were paralleled by substantial changes in the economic and socioeconomic conditions of the region. Planners are interested in restoring the ecological integrity of the region and improving the current state of economic and socioeconomic conditions. Issues that should be considered during development of consented goal states for the ecological and economic health of the region are reviewed. The roles models can play in the development of plans for these efforts is investigated.
