Summary:Scientific papers published during 1998 on the use of biofilms to treat polluted water and wastewater are surveyed. Most recent research has focused on either characterization/measurement or growth/modeling. Reactor types covered include trickling filters, rotating biological contactors, fluidized bed biofilters, submerged bed bioreactors, biological activated carbon, membrane bioreactors, and immobilized cell bioreactors. Work on other innovative reactor types and on biofilms on sand, soil, and sediment also is reviewed. Anaerobic biofilm studies are not reviewed, but some references are provided. One new development is the American Society for Microbiology's online collection of biofilm images.
