Summary:The potential of an estuarine area surrounded by mangrove at Todos os Santos Bay (Bahia State, Brazil), is evaluated for supporting aquaculture activities. From October 1977 to July 1978 samples were collected monthly on alternate tides for determination of particulate organic carbon and total proteins. The following environmental parameters were also considered: salinity, temperature, pH, transparency, dissolved oxygen, silicates, ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, phosphates and precipitation. Although the area presented low cell density and low photosynthetic activity, high values for the standing crop were found, demonstrating the importance of detritic material for the particulate organic matter.
