Summary:Change in carbon dioxide (CO sub(2)) balance under a series of forestry activities in a cool-temperate mixed forest with dense undergrowth is examined. CO sub(2) fluxes over the mixed forest are evaluated by the closed-path eddy covariance method at 32 m height. It is observed that clearcutting of a mixed forest turns the ecosystem from a weak carbon sink to a large carbon source. The large emission in the harvest year rapidly decreases in the following 2 years, caused by a rapid increase in gross primary production (GPP). The ratio of ecosystem soil respiration (RE) increase from 44 percent in the forest to nearly 100 percent after clearcutting, and aboveground parts of the vegetation contribute little to the RE after clearcutting.
