Summary:Improvement in the polypyrrole/vanadium oxide (Ppy/V sub(2)O sub(5)) hybrid as a cathode material for lithium (Li) ion batteries using pyridinesulfonic acid (PSA) as an organic additive was studied. The amount of V super(+5) in the V sub(2)O sub(5).H sub(2)O gel was analyzed by potentiometric titration method. It was observed that the conducting polymer could act as binding and conducting element at the same time while contributing its electroactivity. The hybrid synthesised without acidic solution showed less discharge capacities. The hybrid synthesised with PSA improved its charge storage capacity to near 50 percent of the separate components. It was concluded that SO sub(3)- functional groups of the PSA organic compound favoured the chemical polymerization of polypyrrole inside the V sub(2)O sub(5) structure.
