Summary:During the last decade the interest, use and activities in the Rio de la Plata and adjacent waters of the Atlantic Ocean have increased sharply. The increasing regional trade is reflected in a growing maritime shipping and changes in port activities, services and infrastructure. Fishing activities in the area have to coexist with new partners and rising conflicts in areas where these activities overlap. VMS emissions were used to delimit the area of fishing operations of the Uruguayan fleet and overlay it with the geographic extent of other ongoing and planned activities. We identified commercial shipping routes, areas of hydrocarbon exploration and submarine cable lines of communication. Overlapped emissions were quantified by category and fishery. It was found that the different activities affect fisheries differentially, and that some of those activities cover the entire operating zones of some fisheries. We conclude the need to generate tools and guidelines to improve spatial planning in the area.
