Summary:A toxic extract from the red tide dinoflagellate, Gonyaulax monilata Howell has been isolated. The hemolytic activity of the extract against human erythrocytes was compared, in vitro, to those of digitonin and phospholipase A sub(2). The hemolytic component of the toxic extract appears to cause fragmentation of the erythrocyte membrane. It does not appear that hemolysis is caused by hydrolytic action on the lecithin fraction of the membrane. The active component exhibits chemical characteristics like those of an unsaturated glycolipid, possibly steroid based.
