Summary:While the percentage of students enrolled at university is on a declining trend, selective programmes, because they offer 'prestigious' and/or skills-training courses, are growing in appeal. As the number of students and graduates stabilizes, competition between schools has sharpened, leading researchers to consider higher education as a segmented space, regardless of the analytical focus, be it social and academic profile, research projects, study habits, learning conditions or career prospects. The 'Living Conditions' survey conducted by the Observatoire national de la vie étudiante (a French national observatory of student life) compares the judgements and expectations of undergraduate students in the various segments of higher education: universities, vocational colleges, and selective institutions.
