Summary:Discusses the work of the photographer Candida Höfer. The author notes the increasing interest in documentary photography, assesses the influence of Bernd and Hilla Becher on Höfer's work, and focuses on her photographic series exhibited at Documenta XI based on Rodin's The Burghers of Calais (1884-6) with reference to the works Place de l'Hôtel de Ville Calais II (2000) and Place de k'Hôtel de Ville Calais III (2000). He examines the representation of Rodin's sculptures in NY Carslberg Glyptotek Copenhagen I (2000), focuses on works such as Villa Medici Roma I (2001; col. illus.) and Kunstmuseum Basel I (2000; col. illus.), and considers the representation of narrative in her work.
