Summary:Considers the 50th Venice Biennale Dreams and Conflicts: the Dictatorship of the Viewer held in Venice (15 June-2 Nov. 2003), with special reference to the ceramics exhibited there. The author describes the exhibition Italian Factory, featuring works by Paolo Schmidlin, Marco Cornini, Paolo Cassarà, and Livio Scarpella, exploring themes including death by various causes and the social problems and public images of women throughout history. She also considers the sculptures of the Lithuanian couple Svajone and Paulius Stanikas at the Museo Fortuny, portraying sexuality, suffering, terror and death through large-scale statues suggesting a human family, and the American artist Fred Wilson's Drip, Drop, Plop, a ceramic installation in the Giardini pavilion on the themes of multiculturalism and xenophobia towards immigrants.
