Summary:This article deals with the changes of graphical representations of the Bluebeard tale and its figures from the late seventeenth century up to the present. Analysis of the historic pictorial material on a basis of more than 300 items reveals that illustrations concerning the episode in the blood chamber as well as scences showing the helpless woman at the mercy of the ripper are rather characteristic of the period up to about 1850. After that time the crueel events are sublimated and the representation of Bluebeard handing over the key to his wife dominates, suggesting a change in pedagogical concepts.
