Summary:Study with sintering blends of high amount of low-silica sinter feed was done aiming to reduce the reduction degradation index (RDI) of sinter. Alternatives for sinter quality optimization were evaluated using the physical simulation facilities available at Vale's Marketing and Research & Development Department. The technological alternatives considered to optimize sinter RDI were: increasing of sinter MgO content, reduction of sintering bed height and increasing of sinter slag volume. The most efficient alternatives were associated to SiO(2) and MgO contents modifications. These actions reflected in a significant reduction in RDI (up to 25%). This study aims to support the futures Vale's steel mill projects in Brazil.
