Evaluation of F sub(7) Progenies for Protein Content in Pigeonpea Cajanus cajan (L.) Millspaugh

The significant variability for percentage protein content of eighty one inter-specific progenies (F sub(7)) derived from the parents ICPL84023, PA 134 and UPAS 120 and wild species viz. Cajanus scarabaoeides, C. acutifolius and C. cajanifolius were studied. The range of protein content estimated fo...

Summary:The significant variability for percentage protein content of eighty one inter-specific progenies (F sub(7)) derived from the parents ICPL84023, PA 134 and UPAS 120 and wild species viz. Cajanus scarabaoeides, C. acutifolius and C. cajanifolius were studied. The range of protein content estimated for different crosses like for ICPL 84023 x Cajanus acutifolius were 17.91 to 25.97%. ICPL 84023 x Cajanus cajanifolius ranged from 19.36 to 24.42% but ICPL 84023 x C. scarabaeoides produced the lines with high protein content 33rd line (25.12%). For the whole of the cross UPAS 120 x Cajanus scarabaeoides the range was 23.61 to 29.73% with maximum protein content was observed (29.73%) in 74th line while minimum (23.61%) in 79th line. The seed protein content in F sub(7) progenies ranged from 17.91 to 29.73%. It was also observed that when C. scarabaeoides was used as one of the parent the segregant lines high in protein content could be obtained.
