Summary:H4 with the same characteristics as the German strain3 occurred in the area of Bordeaux, France, after a collective meal on June 8.4 Of nine patients with HUS, a 64-year-old woman presented after haemorrhagic diarrhoea with a platelet count of 14 000 per µL, lactate dehydrogenase 2568 UI/L (upper limit of normal 248), lowest haemoglobin 68 g/L, and anuric acute renal failure. [...] there was a clear temporal relation between immunoadsorption and resolution of symptoms; second, immuno adsorption repeatedly resulted in improvement of symptoms in the same patient; third, immuno adsorption and its positive eff ect is pathophysiologically plausible; fourth, we found a dose-response relation because an increasing number of treatment sessions improved neurological out come. Since HUS is a rare disease, a randomised study is unfeasible and the fi nal answer might only be achieved by a multi centre, multinational approach.
