Summary:This research is focused on knowledge management decisions and their effect on creating sustained competitive advantages based on technological innovations. The technological capabilities complexity construct, as an intermediate variable, shed some light on such relationships, as it let us justify the effect of sources of knowledge and their codification in obtaining sustained competitive advantage. The results show that an intesive use of internal sources of knowledge and its subsequent codification are key factors to develop technological capabilities. The internal structure of capability complexity, derived from both knowledge management decisions, ensures the maintenance of competitive advantages by its effect on barriers to imitation and substitution. Nevertheless, the empirical evidence do not let us explain that the positive effect of the joint use of internal and external sources on technological innovations, could be justified by their effect on the capability complexity structure.
