Summary: | Aircraft maintenance workers are a necessary component to the safe operation of the flights that leave the ground each day. However, while trying to ensure the safety of an aircraft, maintenance workers sometimes suffer an injury that has serious or even fatal consequences. In the past, most aviation safety research has investigated aircraft accidents or property damage caused by pilot or maintenance errors, but similar analyses of mechanic injury incidents are not present in the literature. This paper illustrates the importance of introducing a research focus on injuries occurring during aircraft maintenance tasks and the implications this will have on the industry and future aviation safety research.
