Summary:Times of social, political and economic change create uncertainties and challenges and therefore require effective action by the state, institutions and officials. In today's liberal democracy, the processes of societal development take place within the framework of the rule of law: good governance, economic development, social and economic justice, prevention and reduction of conflict, crime and violence, strengthening of accountability, reduction of corruption, protection of the environment and natural resources can only be ensured in a state governed by the rule of law. That is why democracies rely on the judiciary as the guarantor of the rule of law. Courts play an essential role in the state's transformation processes. Judges play an important role in ensuring peace, stability and, at the same time, development and sustainability. Judges need specific competences to be able to take decisions independently and effectively to achieve these objectives. Judicial excellence and competence are the best guarantees of judicial independence and of the quality of the services provided to society, especially in times of change. The purpose of this article is to highlight the role of judge's competence in ensuring an independent and efficient judiciary and, consequently, in contributing to the economic and legal sustainability of the state and to peace and stability. In order to achieve this goal, the author will describe the duties and requirements of a judge in general terms, analyse them in the context of the requirement of judicial independence, and examine the interrelationship between the role of the court and the duties of judges. The author has used various sources, including monographs and publications, analysed the information available in them, studied case law and interpreted legal acts.
