Summary:Grey discusses the exhibit A Common Bond: Women Artists of Monhegan Island to be held on July 1 to September 30, 2024 at the Monhegan Museum of Art and History in, Monhegan ME. In August 1990, a new group of artists was rumored to be planning shows on Monhegan and on the mainland; a month later, The New Monhegan Press reviewed the first exhibit of the Women Artists of Monhegan Island (WAMI). In many ways the exhibition was typical of summer activities on Monhegan. Since the late nineteenth century, Monhegan's artists have collaborated, whether painting en plein air, visiting one another's studios for informal critiques, or organizing shows. With her friend artist Frances Kornbluth, Elena Jahn co-founded WAMI as a way for women artists on the island, with greater intention than in previous generations, to create a space for collaboration and "mutual support" in a newly invigorated Monhegan art community.
