Summary: | Lansing discusses the exhibit Impressionism 150: From Paris to Connecticut and Beyond to be held at the Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme CT from June 1 to September 8, 2024. April 15, 2024, marks the 150th anniversary of the first exhibition by the group of artists we now call Impressionists. Thirty-one painters, including Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Pierre-Au-guste Renoir, Paul Cezanne, Berthe Morisot, and Alfred Sisley, claimed independence from the official government-sponsored exhibition known as the Salon. They rejected its jury of selection in favor of self-determination and joined together to show their works at the former Paris studio of photographer Nadar as an alternative to the Salon. In the years leading up to their 1874 exhibition, these artists turned away from a centuries-long academic tradition that had prized grand historical and mythological compositions full of carefully modeled figures. |
