Summary: | This study identified which variables predict lifelong alcohol abuse and which variables predict college-only alcohol abuse in college binge drinkers. Specifically, eight variables were used to predict group membership in either the lifelong alcohol abuse or the nonlifelong alcohol abuse group. The participants (N = 150) were male and female college graduates from a 4-year university and ranged in age from 28 to 75 years. A logistic regression was conducted. Utilizing the hypothesized variables, the model correctly classified 92.0% of the participants who were not long-term alcohol abusers and only 50.8% of the long-term alcohol abusers. The results suggest that the four main predictors, physical abuse, sexual abuse, rebellion and independence, and parental alcohol abuse predict more strongly by their absence than by their presence. These variables cluster around abusive and dysfunctional parenting styles. |
