Summary:Basnakova's photobook, Born of Sand and Sun, explores the lives of the last remaining nomadic communities in the Judean Desert. In 1948, with the birth of the state of Israel, many Palestinian Bedouins were displaced from the Negev desert, with 40,000 living in the occupied West Bank in 2013 according to the UN. The Judean Desert, next to the Dead Sea, straddles Israeli and Palestinian territories. For the Bedouin, the desert is the heart of their culture, their lifeblood. Basnakova spent three years photographing the communities who appear in her book. The environment was challenging technically, with its strong, sharp light. She shot the project on medium format film, which must be developed immediately after the photo is taken so that it is not exposed to heat.
