Summary:Managed care and professional nursing share the goal of advocating a system of healthcare that runs cost effectively by emphasizing primary and preventive services, eliminating waste, and providing continuity of care. The potential for ethical disparity can exist for nurses practicing in healthcare climates that focus on cost saving at the expense of needed services. The ability of nurses to provide high quality care in accordance with the American Nurses' Association Code for Nurses is in jeopardy in today's cost containment climate. Nurses are reluctant to vocalize concerns in the restructured employment setting where the concept of employment security in exchange for hospital loyalty has vanished. Traditional nursing values of altruism and caring keep nurses from leaving the profession. The way in which nurses respond to the changes in healthcare will determine the future of the profession.
