Summary: | A first-hand account of the Marquis of Queensberry's disruption of The Promise of May on Nov 14, 1882 is included in James Dyke Campbell's 'Tennysoniana'. This volume, in the Houghton Library, Harvard University, is a book of clippings, 1830-94, relating to Alfred Tennyson: occasional poetry, reviews of books and plays, literary criticism, letters to the editor, and the like (with later additions by John H. Ingram). Campbell occasionally annotated the printed items. He included a clipping from The Times of London, November 15, 1882, 'An Extraordinary Scene.' The anonymous writer reported on Queensberry's interruption of the first act and denunciatory speech from the stalls during the interval. |
