Summary: | Flatheaded Borers Chrysobothris. affinis (Fabricius, 1794) (Buprestidae: Coleoptera) have been recorded for the first time infesting Jujube trees in Basra Province; this pest wide spreads in the commercial jujube orchards throughout the Province, causing a significant economic damage; the infestation rates were higher in the counties of Abu Al?Khasib, Safwan and Al-Zubair in 2020 and Safwan and Al-Zubair in 2021; however, the lowest percentage of infestation rate were in Al-Mudainah and Imam-Sadiq, the north of Basra, in 2020 and 202. The infestation rate varied among the jujube cultivars; the highest infestation rates was on the cultivar Twofahi, followed by Zaitooni and Bambawi cultivars, while the lowest rate was recorded in the wild cultivar. The study of adult’s seasonality indicated that adults started to appear in late April and early May, reaching the peak of population density at May and June. This study warns about an important pest infesting Jujube orchards of Basra that causes economic losses, affecting the livelihood of small growers, which requires monitoring and subsequent application of control actions |
