Summary:For the Love of Vermont: The Lyman Orton Collection will be on view from July 1 through November 5, 2023, with fifty-five artworks at the Bennington Museum, Bennington, VermontFor the Love of Vermont is the account of how one Vermonter's heartfelt affection for his home state launched him into a decades-long quest to retain the art of Vermont here in his beloved state as well as to repatriate artworks that had "escaped" to other states across America. The artworks Lyman Orton researched, hunted, found, bought, and still owns are largely from the early twentieth century, although some canvases date as far back as the 1850s. There is no dominant theme among the artworks in the collection other than it is an art collection about places and life in Vermont. Orton has found remarkable etchings, oil paintings, watercolors, drawings, illustrations, and mixed-media works.
