Summary:Stern profiles artist Joseph L. KIeitsch, highlighting the exhibit Joseph Kleitsch: Abroad and At Home in Old Laguna to be held at the Laguna Art Museum in Laguna Beach CA. Kleitsch was just three years old when his mother died. His father remarried a year later and his new wife encouraged the young boy's artistic talents. When he was seven years old, Joseph began painting and because of his unique talent he was given a stipend by the village to take painting lessons. Mesmerized by the brilliant coastal light, Kleitsch started to paint landscapes and street scenes in Laguna, He especially enjoyed painting the radiant beaches and places in and around the town of Laguna Beach, Often choosing views that he felt would soon succumb to real estate development. His style soon changed, exhibiting more vibrant colors and a bold, active brushstroke.
