Summary:Modiano profiles John Louis Petit who was a lost progressive artist of the mid-19th century. A first article on the art of Petit described how his style evolved over his career. It particularly drew attention to early groups of work that had been hidden in albums until these were broken up in the 1980s and 1990s. The article highlighted especially the dark monochrome style of the mid 1830s, the colourful pictures done in 1839 for his first book, Remarks on Church Architecture (1841), and the atmospheric ruins from 1845 at the end of that early period. The later period, from 1846-68, was less well covered. It indicated that probably more finished work from that period was still to be discovered.
