Summary: | Throughout this 'rise and decline', he charts the 'business of puritanism: fashioning governments and properly reformed Calvinist church establishments that would supervise a unified Christian community and see to it that God's elect were shepherded to heaven' (p. 3). The theology that survived into the eighteenth century and beyond was highly altered in its ambition and influence. Winship is right that Puritanism changed due to fragmentation and the loss of power in Old and New England, and most modern Protestants baulk at their rigid views on matters of church, state and the habits of godliness. |
