Summary: | In this paper we explore the influence that social relations beyond gender/sex have on the grammatical genders of some languages, and how these social relations add to the criteria for classifying nouns in different grammatical genders based on the principle of sexual distinction. We also show how certain types of social relations affect nouns referring to male and female humans differently, but behave in a reasonably homogeneous way in languages of different families and in distant geographical regions. |
