Aunque el recreo y patio se utilicen como sinónimos, el primero se refiere al tiempo escolar de desconexión disciplinar y el segundo al lugar físico destinado para ello, caracterizado según Artavia (2013) por estar al aire libre y acondicionado para diversas actividades relacionadas con la mejora del aprendizaje (almorzar, descansar, jugar, pasear, etc.).
