THE VISION OF CREATING A ROMANIAN INFRASTRUCTURE FOR SOLID EARTH SCIENCE (EPOS-RO)

The European Plate Observing System (EPOS), is a multidisciplinary, distributed research infrastructure that facilitates the integrated use of data, data products, and facilities from the solid Earth science community in Europe. The EPOS pan-European dimension is corroborated by 25 countries, 5 international organizations, 149 national research organizations and 256 research infrastructures involved in the data and service provision. The legal and governance framework designed during the Preparatory Phase and developed during the Implementation Phase has now to be consolidated and formally established to enable the European Plate Observing System - European Research Infrastructure Consortium (EPOS ERIC) governance of the EPOS Delivery Framework. Romania's involvement in EPOS is in line with the national strategy for consolidating, integrating and insuring of an adequate use for research infrastructures, and in full compliance with the main requests for technological and scientific research. Romania, represented by the Romanian National Institute for Research and Development for Earth Physics (INCDFP), was involved in the EPOS project from the very beginning and participated in all phases of the project (Preparation Phase, Implementation Phase and Sustainability Phase) along with other universities and European research institutions. To accomplish and develop a distributed infrastructure in the field of Earth sciences at the national level, a Romanian consortium was established between 7 research institutions and universities (National Institute for Research and Development for Earth Physics - INCDFP, National Institute for Research and Development on Marine Geology and Geo-ecology - GeoEcoMar, Romanian Geological Institute - IGR, University of Bucharest - UB - Faculty of Geology and Geophysics/ Faculty of Physics, INCD in Construction, Urbanism and Sustainable Territorial Development - URBANINCERC, Technical University of Civil Engineering Bucharest - UTCB, Romanian Academy, Institute of Geodynamics "Sabba S. Ştefănescu"), in 2014. The new infrastructure EPOS-RO will ensure the possibility for inter and multidisciplinary research that will use seismological, geophysics and geodesical data combined with geological and satellite data, resulting a simple analysis for natural hazards and precise estimations of the natural resources potential and a better understanding of the dependencies between different components of the natural environment.
