Summary:KEYWORDS chemotherapy; extravasation events; incidence; community cancer center EXTRAVASATION IS DEFINED AS THE INADVERTENT LEAKAGE ОГ escape of a vesicant chemotherapy from a blood vessel into the subcutaneous or subdcrmal tissue at the injection site and can result in varying degrees of tissue damage (Kreidieh et al., 2016). Loss of blood return and a reduction in the infusion rate or cessation of flow, resistance during IV bolus administration, and leakage around the IV catheter or implanted port needle have also been identified (Jäkel & Schulmeister, 2019). If left untreated or if treatment is delayed, blistering, peeling, and sloughing of skin; tissue necrosis; and nerve and tendon damage, as well as functional and sensory impairment of the affected area, can occur (Jäkel 8c Schulmeister, 2019). Data Collection Using an investigator-developed tool, data were collected, analyzed, and reported on actual and suspected extravasation events of vesicants, IVPs, irritants, and exfoliants (see Figure 3).
