Summary:The variation between the conjunction mas and the conjunctival periphrasis só que is investigated to delimit the motivations that favor the application of só que in front of mas and to verify the status of this variable phenomenon. Adopting the theoretical reference of the Labovian sociolinguistics, the corpora provided by the Concordance Project, of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. It has been found that (a) the variation between the forms is still at an early stage and is therefore stable; and (b) the use of só que is conditioned, mainly, to the following contexts: the function of a discursive operator or a conversational shift marker; to verbs that denote material processes, verbal processes and mental processes.
