Summary: | India was the most advanced country in the world in ancient times, experienced a major decline, and, since independence in 1947, is back on the path of growth. In 1AD, according to an estimate, India produced approximately 1/3 of the world's GDP. What was common at that time, as well as today, is the belief in pluralism, i.e., not just tolerance of other ideas and faiths but a quest to understand and co-exist. The role of pluralism in creating an environment for growth is discussed in this paper using observations from history. |
