Summary:KEYWORDS: video, investigations, tactics, identification, authenticity INTRODUCTION In practice, a multitude of video recording sources are identified, most of them coming from private entities, whether we are talking about images captured by mobile devices or closed-circuit video surveillance systems, widely known as CCTV. In order to be able to exploit these means of proof effectively, with particular reference to video recordings from closed circuit surveillance (CCTV) systems, I will try to sketch a guide with the following steps: STEP 1 - IDENTIFY THE CCTV SYSTEM We must be aware from the outset that the CCTV system in its broadest sense can have different characteristics related to the operating architecture: a. analog system with DVR (digital video recorder) - video cameras capture images that they transmit to the recorder analog, and then are encoded and stored on a disc; b. IP system with NVR (network video recorder) - video cameras capture images that they encode and transmit them digitally to the recorder that stores them on a disc; c. system that uses servers or a PC, helped by a specialized software (VMS - video management system) - video cameras (analog or IP) capture images that they transmit to a computer that with the help of a VMS stores and manages them; d. digital video cameras with local recording - they contain a storage medium on which the images captured by the camera are stored. Depending on the crimes investigated, law enforcement agencies may be brought to the attention of images captured by various concealed or hidden video cameras, which may themselves be objects used to commit crimes such as privacy, home invasion or even those provided. in law 51 of 19916, so we need to be very careful when identifying the system that generated the video images. Some of them are from very old generations that are not compatible with modern storage media such as USB connection and will be able to generate optical discs with images of interest that in most cases will be chronophagous or will compress / recompress images, obviously with severe quality loss.
