Summary: | The tasks that social networks satisfy in the contemporary media scene, and the applications that derive from them, show the interest of the academic institution when contemplating them as references for research of diverse nature. The results show that this is a relevant object of study, with a predominance of publications in Spanish on Journalism, Pedagogy and Sociology, collectively authored research and the preeminence of Spain as the country of origin of the works. Su aparición a finales de la década de los 60 del siglo XX inauguró un cambio en las comunicaciones que se concretaría en 1989 cuando Tim Berners-Lee "desarrolló para el CERN el protocolo HTTP, creando la World Wide Web (WWW) y el lenguaje HTML, que solo dos años después comenzarían a utilizarse y difundirse profusamente en Internet" (Pérez, Frías & Urueña, 2018, p. 21).
