Summary:It has been over twenty-four years since there has been an exhibition of the under-recognized American painter Agnes Pelton (1881-1961) and it comes eighty-eight years after a favorable review appeared in American Art Review. Almost nine decades later, we are still laying the groundwork for a greater understanding of her contribution to American modernism and abstraction, while embracing an appreciation of her work by a generation of contemporary artists. Pelton's distinctive paintings can be described as metaphysical landscapes rooted in the California desert near Cathedral City, a place she called home for almost thirty years, yet they grew out of a sensibility firmly established prior to her arrival in the West. Agnes Pelton: Desert Transcendentalist is on view through November 2, 2020, at the Whitney Museum of American Art, 99 Gansevoort Street, New York, New York.
