Summary:As voices for action against climate change grow around Europe and North America through movements such as Extinction Rebellion, the recent Global Climate Strike, and discussion of a Green New Deal, a fundamental piece of the story remains largely absent from the discussion: that the severe challenges from climate change will be most severely felt in Africa, which will soon be home to over one in three people on Earth.1 This reveals the continued ignorance and apathy with which much of the rich world views the continent. Climate change will be the third great wave-following slavery and colonialism-of under-acknowledged exploitation of the continent by the rich world. The rich world would do much better by acknowledging that the battle to address climate change must be waged first and foremost in defense of Africa.
